A Letter From Our Founder

Happy Birthday America!

This month we celebrate 250 years of an identity built on FREEDOM

It is a fact that America's DNA is built on the foundation of Freedom. See The Declaration of Independence for reference.

And it is also happens to be our middle name.

Therefore, if Freedom means so much to us both, then we must not tolerate the deprivation of one person's freedom as a result of another’s profit or power motive, aka trafficking.

As the Founder and Board Chair of the i-5 Freedom Network, here are 5 things that Freedom means to me in the fight against human trafficking

1. Freedom is an unalienable right. And It cannot coexist with tolerance of any kind for exploitation and trafficking

• We must stop looking the other way. City leaders need to know that human trafficking is in the strip malls masquerading as a massage establishment, hoteliers need to know they are hosting traffickers and sex buyers as victims get paraded through the lobbies in plain sight. We have seen immigration laws go silent when there is a need for cheap labor in sweatshops and strawberry fields.

• The i-5 Freedom Network was founded in 2015 on the outrage of this tolerance and chose a path of action by creating simple and enforceable tools to end these crimes. But for those tools to work, they need to be picked up by those not willing to tolerate trafficking. You can help make that happen here.

2. Freedom requires Action. When it is threatened America fights for it.

• If we are willing to go to war to fight for freedom for other nations, we must show the same fierce determination for our own neighbors being enslaved and trafficked right here at home. Awareness tells us a problem exists; justice demands we fix it. And justice requires action.

3. Freedom is Fragile. The line between Freedom and food is a short one

• Getting a job is a milestone, but keeping a job is what secures long-term liberty. True freedom means equipping Survivors with the skills to permanently stand on their own feet. Sex and labor trafficking Survivors more often than not emerge from exploitation with a rap sheet. They are arrested for prostitution rather than identified as victims, or detained as undocumented because their legal visas were weaponized against them by traffickers to enforce sub-minimum wages.

4. Freedom requires accountability, accountability to laws and to each other

• Freedom is protected from the outside in. The Declaration of Independence indicates that governments are created to protect these freedoms. Yet over and over again we see those in power fail victims of trafficking for reasons from frustrating to baffling, think the Epstein files…

• When laws rely on punitive measures rather than preventative accountability, they systematically miss the vast majority of ongoing exploitation. True accountability means providing communities and local businesses with clear compliance frameworks that force the doors of illicit operations shut for good.

5. Freedom for All is our Mission.

• Freedom isn't a temporary rescue mission—it is a permanent foundation. We don't just intervene in the crisis; we build the systemic roadmap that ensures all people can live with lasting dignity.

• How, you ask?

  • We equip Survivors with the critical skills to maintain stability through our Way2Work program and work-force development opportunities, turning trauma in purpose and resilience into a rallying cry

  • We engage city leaders to recognize how human trafficking is happening in their community

  • We provide a roadmap that is simple and actionable to address and shutdown illicit massage enterprises* and to create an incentive program that encourages compliance training for hotels in their respective community
